The University of Derby is an ambitious, innovative and modern university focused on real world learning. Our main aim is to provide our students with a top class international experience and help them to develop their skills to ensure they succeed in their careers.
We are ranked in the Top 50, at 48th place out of 119 institutions, in the Guardian University Guide 2017 and are a top 10 university for teaching quality (Times & Sunday Times League Table 2016).
We are No1 for International Student support for the second year running and 81.1% of our international graduates are in a graduate job or in further study after completing their degree**
Our commitment to real world learning means that we are continually investing in some of the best university facilities you will find in the UK. Our unique state of the art facilities include engineering labs and photographic and music recording studios; industry standard kitchens and a fine dining restaurant; insectary, glass house and observation rooms; computer games suites; a commercial spa; a law court and forensic house.
This is part of a £150 million investment in new facilities in the last ten years, including an NHS-standard hospital ward with clinical skills and radiography suites and most recently a £10.8 million sports centre incorporating a fitness gym, studios, squash and badminton courts, an internal climbing wall, sprint track, treatment rooms and café.
Students have the opportunity to work in these unique environments to ensure they get the hands-on practical skills and experience employers are looking for.
Derby is the UK’s most central city so it is at the heart of the transport network too. This means it’s a thriving multicultural city renowned for technology and innovation. It’s why many global companies are based here, such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Bombardier. It’s an exciting place to learn and experience university life, providing you with many opportunities to gain real world experience through placements and internships. There’s a lively night life with plenty of bars, clubs, restaurants and live music venues for those that want it, and the Peak District National Park is close by offering inspiring countryside and exhilarating outdoor activities.
Students are taught by passionate, industry-experienced lecturers who have long-standing relationships with leading employers. They will inspire and support student goals and offer a personal learning experience with one to one support. We have a greater staff to student ratio than most other universities, which means students will get more dedicated time with their lecturers in seminars and on work projects. It’s this approach that sees our students go on to take roles with leading national and international employers, such as the BBC, Lego, and Elemis.
